Game Notes

Tuesday 13th May 2003 - Game #35

Could not listen - internet radio not working - but heard a little of the post-game show

Reading Phillies - home game at Blair County Ballpark
Playing first base - batting at #3
Had 4 plate appearances - 3 at bats - and a walk
Facing a pair of right-handers during the game, Brett punched out a double which drove in two runs
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "Buchholz, one of the Phillies top pitching prospects and a native of suburban Philadelphia, was nearly unhittable throughout his first seven innings of work before surrending a pair of runs on a Brett Roneberg double in the bottom of the eighth, cutting the Phils' lead to 6-2"
(2) "Buchholz carried a shutout into the eighth inning before giving up a pair of runs on Brett Roneberg's double"
(3) "Brett Roneberg broke up a shutout bid by Buchholz with a two-run double in the eighth inning for the Curve, who have lost four in a row"

Email to Brett
Hi,
and I missed the game again!!!
Radio server busy!!!
But I logged on this morning 1 hour 45 minutes before the game was due to start!!!
And I had perfect reception.
But just before the game was due to start, I got kicked off the radio hook-up and could not get back on again.
I usually try again towards the end of the game because some people disconnect.
And I got on!!!
Just in time for the Post Game Show.
Rob Egan was going through the scoring during the game and came to the bottom of the eighth.
Two strike outs to lead it off.
Then the next two got on.
Then RONEBERG strides to the plate.
An 2 x RBI double.
And he replays all the hits.
SO I HEARD IT!!!
And, because you were the first Curve player to drive in runs for about 18 innings, you were also announced as the winner of the Curve "Player of the Game" (not sure of the details or who the sponsor is, etc, etc or even what this means)
Your name was also mentioned during the recap of the Phillies scoring earlier in the game.
Rob Egan mentioned a "diving attempt to the left" you made when trying to cut off a double down that side.
TANYA
You better ring the Postal-Manager-who-embezzles-money and read out this story.
And tell her - "Ha, ha, I heard, you didn't!!!".
Pleased and happy for you, #17.
Email from Ed Leipold, who was at Blair County Ballpark watching the game
The only bright spot, Brett doubled in the first 2 runs the Curve have scored in 20 innings.
He was named "Player Of The Game"

Wednesday 14th May 2003 - Game #36

Could not listen - internet radio 'busy/overloaded'

Reading Phillies - home game at Blair County Ballpark
Playing leftfield - batting at #5
Had 4 plate appearances - 3 at bats - and a 'sacrifice fly'
Brett picked up a single and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly (the bases were loaded) - and struck out twice!!!
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "The Curve rallied with single runs in the first and fifth innings.
Brett Roneberg's sacrifice fly got Altoona on the board"

Thursday 15th May 2003 - Game #37
Listening to the game - live on internet radio!!!

Binghamton Mets - road game at NYSEG Stadium
Playing first base - batting at #2
Had 6 plate appearances - 5 at bats - and a walk
------1) RHP - called/swing&miss/ball/swing&miss - strike out!!! - changeups got him!!! - and had a runner in scoring position
------2) RHP - called/ball/called/ball, and then a pop-up on the infield - out "PO3" - another runner in scoring position
------3) RHP - popped-up down the third base side, and the third-baseman had room - out "F5"
------4) LHP - worked to a full count, then took another ball - walk - to second on another walk - left stranded
------5) LHP - bases loaded!!! - but hit into a fielder's choice!!! - run scored, but Brett was not awarded an RBI - initially he was, but a scoring change was made later in the game - the throw from the Mets fielder was to home and off-line resulting in an unearned run
------6) LHP - had two strikes and then tried to check his swing but the umpire "punched him out" - second strike out of the day!!!
Had five at bats, but could not get a hit - and, like yesterday, he struck out twice again!!!
From the game commentator - who is from the Mets staff
Before Brett had his third at bat, the Mets pitcher had just issued a four pitch walk to Duffy - Brett swung at the first pitch he saw and popped it up to the third-baseman - the commentator said that "that is the type of thing that makes any Manager mad" - he went on to say that in a game where the hitters are on top as in this game, "first pitch swinging is not on - period!!!" - is he right, is he wrong??? - who knows what the Manager or Brett was thinking - this is just what I heard
A "radio call" to us!!!
I sent the following note via the "Contact the Commentator" section of the Mets web site - and we got a 'hello' from Binghamton in New York State!!!
"Just saying hi.
We are the parents of the Curve first-baseman, Brett Roneberg.
We live in Cairns, which is in the tropical north of Australia.
And it's great to have this internet radio - thanks to all concerned.
The 6.00pm start over there means the game gets underway here at 8.00am Friday morning.
We have done all the housework, and ready to listen to a great four game series!!!
Regards,
Geoff and Sharon"

Email from Brett
Hope you all didn't listen to the first game.
Wasn't too good at all.
Don't think I will play Friday but who knows.
Hope so.
Will talk to you all later.

Friday 16th May 2003 - Game #38
Listening to the game - live on internet radio!!!

Binghamton Mets - road game at NYSEG Stadium
Did not play
but had a "pinch hit" at bat in the top of the ninth innings - and received a walk
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "A stunned crowd of 4,671 looked on as the B-Mets failed to hold a 4-3 lead in the final inning.
Three walks loaded the bases with one out for Curve clean-up man Chan Perry.
Facing Binghamton closer P.J. Bevis, Perry hit a slow chopper over the mound that was fielded by shortstop Gil Velazquez.
A flip to second resulted in a force out, but David Becani's relay throw to first was not in time to retire Perry.
Brett Roneberg scored from third and Skrehot, who started the play at second base, kept running toward the plate.
The dash to the dish surprised B-Mets' first baseman Craig Brazell.
His throw home was late as Skrehot scored the go-ahead run"
(2) "Relievers Nick Mattioni and P.J. Bevis walked the bases loaded in the ninth inning, and their wildness proved costly in the Mets' 5-4 Eastern League loss to the Curve on Friday night in front of the largest crowd of the season, 4,671, at NYSEG Stadium.
Mattioni issued the first two passes, to Brett Roneberg and Shaun Skrehot, with the Mets leading, 4-3.
Bevis didn't offer much relief, moving both runners up 90 feet with a walk to Jose Castillo.
Roneberg and Skrehot both scored when the Mets failed to turn Chan Perry's one-out slow roller to shortstop into a double play"

Email from Brett
Did play yesterday - well, not really.
Pinch-hit in the ninth and he walked me on four pitches,
and I scored the tying run.
Then played in the bottom of the ninth.
Hopefully I will play Saturday,
but I am not sure - who knows.
I will write more in New Haven.
Bye all and wish me luck.
See ya.

Saturday 17th May 2003 - Game #39

Listening to the game - live on internet radio!!!

Binghamton Mets - road game at NYSEG Stadium
Playing leftfield - batting at #6
Had 4 plate appearances - 3 at bats - and a walk
------1) RHP - fly ball into left-centrefield - out "F8" - and was an RBI opportunity
------2) RHP - with a runner at second base, Brett lifted a ball over the head of the Mets centrefielder and into the wall - and got himself a standup double and an RBI - left stranded at the end of the inning
------3) RHP - led off the innings and picked a walk - to second base on another walk - left stranded again
------4) RHP - line drive into leftfield - out "F7" - and was another RBI opoortunity
From the game commentator - who is from the Mets staff
Following Brett's double, the commentator said "he hit that about as far as you can in NYSEG Stadium without it being a home run"
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites

(1) "Brett Roneberg had an RBI double to lead Altoona, which has dropped six of its last eight games"
(2) "Shawn Garrett led the Curve offense by going 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored.
Brett Roneberg knocked in Garrett with a two-bagger in the fourth inning for Altoona's lone run"
The size of NYSEG Stadium
I sent the following note via the "Contact the Commentator" section of the Mets web site
"Hi,
and we are listening to the game from Cairns in Australia.
I have just looked through the B-Mets web site, but can't find details of the field dimensions.
Can you put them over the radio, including the distance from home to straightaway centrefield.
Thank you,
Geoff and Sharon Roneberg"
......and here is their reply
330 feet - down the lines
375 feet - to alleys
400 feet - to straightaway center

Email to Brett
Your Saturday game.
That was better!!!
Can't update my page because Sharon wants to go for a drive!!!
To Port Douglas!!!
So I gotta go!!!
And will do my page when we get home.
Will be tuned in 3.30am tomorrow morning (our Monday)
Bye, bye.
Email from Brett
Felt pretty good today.
Crushed my double to centre field - was robbed of a homer.
400 feet to centre and it hit 3 inches from the top - a line drive on a 1-1 change-up.
Same as always but felt great.
Dont think I am going to play tomorrow.
He never plays me against lefties - and I hit them better,
but I am sure you will see after the box score
See ya

Sunday 18th May 2003 - Game #40
Listening to the game - live on internet radio!!!

Binghamton Mets - road game at NYSEG Stadium

New Haven Ravens - road game at Yale Field

Had 3 plate appearances - 3 at bats
------1) LHP - called/swing&miss/ball/ball and then a called strike - curve ball - strike out!!!
Did not get a hit during his three at bats - struck out twice
Heard during the Game
After Brett struck out in his first at bat, the commentator said that "Brett is having a few words to the home plate umpire, but he will not win that arguement"

Email from Brett
Well today I went 0 for 3 - with 2 x K's and a line up/fly ball to centre.
I hit it good.
The other way is I felt awesome at the plate.
Sat up this morning and wrote some things down that I wanted to do - and I did them.
Had great BP and felt great at the plate.
The first strikeout was 'at the eyes' and I got a little upset.
Then the next one was about 10 inches inside, and was upset again.
But either way I felt great at the plate - but got nothing for the day!!
Oh well, back at them tomorrow.
See ya.
Email from Sharon
Hi Brett.
Dad didn't answer your email cause he wanted to talk to me about it first so I am answering.
We can see that things aren't going great for you at the moment
but we know you are trying to turn that around by stuff that you write and we just wish you the best.
You have to have faith in your actual ability and your ability to work through problems using all the help you have available.
I have even been doing a bit of praying ( I bet you are thrilled with this news!)
I pray that you will be given the opportunities to show your strength and skill and that you will be successful.
(Dad thinks I pray that you will hit a homerun!!)
I also pray that you will be strong mentally for what you need to do,
and that you will be happy.
Do you have tissues handy??
Having great BP and feeling "awesome " is a wonderful start
and as I said before we wish you good luck.
I have just read this again and I am gunna send it anyway - I am your Mother and I can write what I like!!
I said a prayer for Tanya last night and she got a job interview!!
Love you and am proud of you
Mum
......and a reply from Brett
Well, just to tell you all that I am fine.
I feel great in the box,
and it's just a matter of getting the hits and getting some consistentcy.
It will happen soon.
Thanks for the email, but relax 'cause I am.
We still have over 100 games to go and that is a long time to do some damage.
Talk to you all soon.
Brett

From the Curve web site - "News and Notes" - before Tuesday's game
"1B/OF Brett Roneberg is in a 2-for-14 tailspin"

Tuesday 20th May 2003 - Game #42
Listening to the game - live on internet radio!!!

New Haven Ravens - road game at Yale Field
Playing rightfield (first time this season - and since August 2002 when playing for the Harrisburg Senators) - batting at #6
Had 5 plate appearances - 3 at bats - and two walks
------1) RHP - batting with a runner at first base - ball/ball/ball (wild pitch and runner went to second base) and then "a strike right down the middle of the plate" and the full count pitch was another ball - walk - left stranded at the end of the innings
------2) RHP - batting with a runner at first base - ball/swing&miss/ball/ball/foul and the full count pitch was another ball - second walk of the night - and was again left stranded at the end of the innings
------3) RHP - batting with a runner at first base - ball/ball/ball and belted the next pitch - but it was off the pitcher's leg, and then bounced to third base and Brett was out "1-to-5-to-3" - he must have had the green-light with the 3/0 count
------4) RHP - batting with a runner at first base - foul/ball/foul/swing&miss - strike out!!!
------5) RHP - ball/foul/foul/swing&miss - another strike out!!!
Unable to get a hit from his three at bats - struck out twice - and picked two walks
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "Cam is OK
Fans who saw Ravens pitcher Cam Reimers go down after being struck by a batted ball Tuesday night will be happy to know that the righty is all right.
Reimers suffered a bruised knee and is listed as day-to-day; he is scheduled to make his next start"
(2) "Reimers got the third out on a scary play that knocked him out of the game.
Brett Roneberg hit a vicious liner right back at the mound that hit Reimers just above his right hamstring.
The ball bounded to Pond, who got the out at first.
But Reimers went down in a heap and remained there for a few minutes.
Reimers eventually walked off under his own power, yet he was removed from the game.
Pevey said the injury wasn’t serious, and he doesn’t expect Reimers to miss his next start"

------2) RHP - led off the innings - first pitch swinging - high fly ball down the leftfield line - out "F7"
------3) RHP - batting with a runner at second base - foul/ball/ball/ball/ball - walk - then there was a double-steal with the play at third base - reached second base and got a stolen base - went to third base on a hit, and then scored on another hit
------4) RHP - bases empty - ball/foul/called, and then a ground ball to short stop - ball was misplayed, and Brett was safe at first base on an error - during the next batter, Brett attempted to get to second base but was caught stealing
Not able to get a hit - walk, a stolen base, caught stealing, and scored a run
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "Altoona built the lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.

Email from Brett
Just want to write and say hi.
