Pop up to shortstop - F6
Second plate appearance
Righthanded pitcher
Bases empty - one down
"Brett jumps on that ball and hits it very hard but it's right at the Met's rightfielder who is able to make the catch ... here we are in the top of the fourth innings and that would easily be the hardest hit ball of the night so far ... Roneberg gave it a ride but the Curve are still looking for their first hit in the ballgame"
Line out to rightfield - F9

NYSEG Stadium
Centrefield dimension = 400 feet

Third plate appearance
Righthanded pitcher
Runner at third base - two down
Called strike - breaking ball
Ball - fast ball - down and away
Swing and a miss - "Brett tried to check his swing on that ball in the dirt but the home plate umpire said he went too far ... Brett turns and grins at the umpire and he could be asking him to refer to the third base umpire but the answer is no and it's the second strike on Roneberg"
Foul ball - back
"Oh boy, Roneberg has got hold off that!!! ... it is hit high and hard out to right-centrefield!!! ... and the fielder is chasing it down and makes a dive but he comes up empty!!! ... the ball bounces at the foot of the wall and Brett is chugging around the bases and arrives at third base for his first triple of the season ... the runner from third base trots in to score and Brett has his seventh run batted in for the season ... off the bat it looked like that had enough to leave the park and give Brett his second home run of the year"

Left stranded at the end of the innings
Fourth plate appearance

Righthanded pitcher
Led off the innings
Swing and a miss
"That is high and heading down into the leftfield corner ... and the fielder can't get there!!! ... and Brett is trotting into second base for a lead off double here in the top of the seventh innings ... Brett now has two hits in the game, a double and a triple"
Double to leftfield
Advanced to third base on a balk - "That didn't look too good for the pitcher ... it appeared that he got his cleat caught on the mound ... he seems to be okay, but it's an illegal move and Roneberg will be awarded third base"
Scored on a hit
Fifth plate appearance
Righthanded pitcher
Led off the innings
Ball - fast ball - outside
"There is more really solid contact by Roneberg ... he drives that deep into centrefield and the fielder is back-pedalling and makes the catch on the warning track ... Brett hit that to the deepest part of the ballpark and it nearly snuck out of here"
Fly out to centrefield - F8

At the end of the Game
2 hits from 5 at-bats - double, triple, 1 x run batted in, 1 x run scored

Heard during the game

(01) During the bottom of the fourth innings, the commentator said - "The lead off hitter for the Mets is Miguel Negron and he hits the ball down the line into leftfield ... the ball is slicing into foul territory and Roneberg is tracking it down ... and he makes a very nice play and the hitter is retired!!! ... there isn't much room in foul territory here at NYSEG Stadium and Brett made a great play up against the tarpaulin down there in leftfield"

(02) He also mentioned - "For some reason or other, Brett is not wearing his normal #17 uniform ... he has on #39, which is actually not assigned to any player on the Curve roster"

Game Reports

The Curve scored four runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings
en route to a 10-6 win over the Binghamton Mets Saturday afternoon
Seven players posted at least two hits, including Neil Walker (pictured)
who hit his first home run of the season

Two four-run innings lift Curve, 10-6

Pitching dominated through four innings on Saturday, but the Curve put up back-to-back four run innings that propelled them to a 10-6 victory over the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton

B-Mets starter Salvador Aguilar seemed to be cruising, holding Altoona off the scoreboard on just one hit through the fourth inning, but the Curve exploded in the fifth

Adam Boeve led off the inning with a single which was followed by a Dave Parrish single
Taber Lee then singled to give the Curve a 1-0 lead
A batter later, Andrew McCutchen tripled to the power-alley in left-centerfield to clear the bases and put Altoona in front 3-0
Aguilar was removed from the ballgame as Binghamton brought in Marcelo Perez, but the Curve got a second consectutive triple off the bat of Brett Roneberg to score McCutchen and lead 4-0

The rally woke the slumbering B-Mets

Wardell Starling, who was dominant through the first four innings, also had things fall apart in the fifth
In the bottom of the inning, Jose Coronado singled to start things
Coronado was forced at second on a ground-out by Corey Ragsdale
It was the last out that Starling would record
Starling walked Marcelo Perez and then gave up an RBI single to Fernando Martinez to get Binghamton on the board
He then hit Mark Kiger in the back to load the bases
Miguel Negron took a walk with the bases full to force home a run and make it a 4-2 ballgame
That walk was the end of the line for Starling, who departed in favor of Jason Roach
Roach's first pitch of the game was wild and kicked to the backstop allowing another to score and bring the B-Mets to within one run at 4-3
Mike Carp drilled a double that scored two and Binghamton led for the first time at 5-4
Carp then scored the sixth run of the inning on a single by Mike Nickeas and a combined ten-run inning left the score 6-4 in favor of the B-Mets

Although Roach endured a rough outing, the Curve put him in a position to win the ballgame with another outburst in sixth
Neil Walker led off with his first home run of the season, a towering blast over the wall in right field
Boeve then started things right back up with a single which was followed by another single by Parrish
Taber Lee then stroked a single to right to load the bases and Alex Fernandez followed with a bounce-out to first base that tied the game at 6-6
The grounder also moved Parrish to third and Lee to second
They scored from there when the newest member of the Curve, Jason Bowers collected a two-run single to put Altoona ahead for good, 8-6

Dave Davidson came on in relief for Altoona to start the sixth and was brilliant, holding Binghamton scoreless for 2-2/3 innings into the eighth

Matt Peterson took over from there, and collected the final four outs of the game

The Curve added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Walker singled home Brett Roneberg

The final run of the ballgame scored in the eighth as Bowers doubled to bring home Lee

Roach (1-1) earned the win for the Curve despite his troubles in the six-run fifth inning for Binghamton

Perez (0-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing four earned runs in 2/3 of an inning

The Curve scored a season-high ten runs in the win, but it may have come at a price
Dave Parrish was taken to the hospital following the game to examine a possible broken nose
Parrish was injured in the eighth inning on the back-swing of Jose Coronado

The three-game series will be decided tomorrow at 1.05pm
RHP Yoslan Herrera (0-1, 7.71) will make the start for Altoona
RHP Kevin Mulvey (1-3, 6.06) will oppose him for Binghamton

Busy Curve bats top Mets

All eight position players recorded at least one hit as the Curve used 16 hits to outlast the Mets, 10-6, on Saturday at Binghamton Municipal Stadium

After working through four scoreless innings, the two teams broke out with a combined 10 runs scored in the fifth
The Curve plated four in the top half before Binghamton replied with six in the bottom of the frame

Altoona's fifth-inning outburst was sparked by back-to-back two-out triples by outfielders Andrew McCutchen and Brett Roneberg, while Binghamton's big blow was a two-run double off the bat of Mike Carp

The Curve immediately responded to the two-run deficit in the top of the sixth as leadoff hitter Neil Walker belted his first homer of the season
After three consecutive singles loaded the bases, Alex Fernandez tied the game with an RBI groundout
Jason Bowers followed with a two-run single to give the Curve a two-run advantage

Walker and Bowers provided Altoona with insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively

Jason Roach was credited with the win in relief of starter Wardell Starling, who allowed five runs on three hits and four walks over 4-1/3 innings

Marcelo Perez suffered the loss out of the bullpen
Perez was tagged for four runs on six hits in just 2/3 of an inning

Six run fifth innings not enough for B-Mets

The Binghamton Mets went ahead with a big fifth inning, but the Altoona Curve scored in four different frames to pick up a 10-6 victory at NYSEG Stadium Saturday

Binghamton’s loss, which evens the series at a game apiece, is their eighth in nine games

Both teams combined for two hits over the first four innings before Altoona (9-10) scored four times in the top of the fifth
The inning began with three straight singles off Salvador Aguilar, with Taber Lee picking up an RBI
Andrew McCutchen drove in two more with a two-out triple before scoring on Brett Roneberg’s subsequent triple off B-Mets reliever Marcelo Perez

Jose Coronado began the Binghamton (4-12) half of the fifth with a base hit before being erased on a fielder’s choice that allowed Corey Ragsdale to reach
After Wardell Starling walked Perez (0-3), Fernando Martinez singled home Ragsdale
Mark Kiger was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Miguel Negron, who walked, scoring Perez and chasing Starling from the game
On came Altoona reliever Jason Roach, whose first pitch went to the backstop, scoring Martinez
The next pitch by Roach (1-1) was lined to left by Mike Carp for a go-ahead two-run double that scored Kiger and Negron
Carp would come home on a base hit by Mike Nickeas for a 6-4 B-Mets lead

However, Altoona put four more runs on the board in the sixth on Neil Walker’s leadoff homer, Alex Fernandez’s RBI groundout and a two-run single by Jason Bowers

Walker picked up an RBI single in the seventh and Bowers doubled home another run in the eighth for the final margin of victory

Sunday, the B-Mets play the rubber game of their three-game series against the Altoona Curve
Kevin Mulvey (1-3, 6.06) gets the start for the B-Mets against Yoslan Herrera (0-1, 7.71) of Altoona
Game time is 1.05pm from NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 12:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF

Notes
Former B-Mets Roach and Matt Peterson pitched today for Altoona
Binghamton’s had the lead in each of their last four games
The six-run inning is a B-Mets season-high

Offense rolls against EL’s last-place team

Tony Beasley’s return, albeit brief, as Curve manager coincided with the club’s best offensive showing of the season Saturday
Of course, Altoona was playing the Eastern League’s worst team, so Beasley’s influence may not have been a big factor in the 10-6 win over Binghamton at NYSEG Stadium

The 10 runs set a season high for the Curve, who also matched their top hit production with 16

Altoona scored four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, Neil Walker hit his first homer and newcomer Jason Bowers had three RBIs

Curve manager Tim Leiper is away from the team for a few days for personal reasons, so Beasley took over Saturday as interim manager
Beasley, the Pirates’ roving infield coordinator, guided Altoona during the 2004 and ’05 seasons and led the club to the playoffs each year
Beasley should remain in charge today
The Curve are off Monday, and there’s a good chance Leiper will rejoin the club Tuesday at Connecticut

‘‘I don’t think it’s affecting the team at all’’ Curve reliever Jason Roach told the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin about the managerial switch
‘‘To be honest, I think a lot of guys didn’t realize Leiper wasn’t here until the game started Friday night’’

Binghamton, an EL-worst 4-12, scored six runs in the fifth inning to erase Altoona’s 4-0 edge

The Curve quickly reclaimed the lead in their next at-bat
Walker’s homer started the inning, and Alex Fernandez’s groundout scored Adam Boeve to tie it
Bowers, who joined the Curve on Friday, followed with a two-run single that scored Dave Parrish and Taber Lee for an 8-6 lead

Lee went 3-for-3, and six others had two hits for Altoona

Roach (1-1) won in relief after Curve starter Wardell Starling allowed five runs in 4-1/3 innings

Marcelo Perez (0-3) lost in relief for Binghamton

Jose Coronado of the B-Mets is out at second as Taber Lee of Altoona throws
late to first in trying to turn a double play in the fifth inning of Saturday's game

B-Mets pitchers can't hold Altoona
6-4 lead slips away in loss to Curve

Jason Roach and Matt Peterson, a couple of former prospective starters in the New York Mets organization, have found a new home in the Altoona Curve's bullpen
The two former Binghamton Mets continued their new career paths on Saturday afternoon in Altoona's 10-6 victory at NYSEG Stadium

Roach, who is primarily a relief pitcher for the first time in his 11-year pro career, pitched two-thirds of an inning to pick up the victory
Peterson, who's in his first full season coming out of the bullpen, pitched 1-1/3 scoreless innings to close the victory for the Curve and send the B-Mets (4-12) to their eighth loss in nine games

"It was a crazy game" Roach said
"I wish I could have done a better job picking up for starter Wardell Starling, but our hitters were able to pick it up and get some big hits"

The game began as a pitchers' duel
B-Mets starter Salvador Aguilar carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning, and Starling allowed just one hit through four
The duel didn't last
Altoona scored four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and finished the game with 16 hits

"It was like Jekyll and Hyde" B-Mets manager Mako Oliveras said
"In the first four innings, there was no offense
From the fifth on, they got all their hits"

Roach, 31, went 11-11 in 29 starts with the B-Mets between 2000-02
He started two games for New York in 2003 (losing both) and eventually signed with the Pirates as a free agent in 2005
He split last year between Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis, going 8-9 in 27 starts
But this offseason, he began tinkering with a side-arm delivery

"I was playing with it in January" Roach said
"I was throwing at a college, and a Pirates' scout was there watching
He liked it and it worked well"

With a new motion, the Pirates moved Roach into the bullpen
"I like it" he said of being a reliever
"With a new delivery, it was a time in my career to take a chance and make a change"

On Saturday, Roach came on in the fifth
The Curve had taken a 4-0 lead in their half of the inning, but the B-Mets got two of the runs back and loaded the bases on Starling
Roach's first pitch was wild, allowing Fernando Martinez to score from third
Mike Carp hit an opposite field double to give the B-Mets a 5-4 lead, and Mike Nickeas added an RBI single to give the B-Mets a 6-4 lead, with all but the final run charged to Starling

The lead was short-lived
The Curve scored four runs in the sixth off B-Mets reliever Marcello Perez (0-3) to take an 8-6 lead and make a winner out of Roach

Peterson came on in the eighth in relief of Dave Davidson
A former top-5 prospect in the Mets organization who went 7-5 in Binghamton in 2003-04, Peterson was sent to Pittsburgh in 2004 in the Kris Benson deal
He spent all last season in Altoona, first as a starter and then as a reliever

Peterson entered Saturday's game with a win and two saves and said he loves his role in the bullpen
"It's more adrenaline, and it's all on you at the end" said Peterson, who allowed ninth-inning singles to Mark Kiger and Miguel Negron
"You've got to trust your stuff a lot more
If you look crappy in the bullpen, it's going to show on the mound, so you've just got to trust yourself"

Around the Horn
Martinez and Negron each had two hits for the B-Mets, who sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth inning but had just four hits in the other eight innings - "We just didn't execute well enough" Carp said
Altoona manager Tim Leiper is not with the team this weekend, as he returned home to Ottawa to attend to a family matter
Curve hitting coach Brandon Moore has been the team's acting manager the past two days

Scoring spurts help Altoona to victory

Pitching dominated through four innings on Saturday, but the Curve put up back-to-back four run innings that propelled them to a 10-6 victory over the Binghamton

Binghamton starter Salvador Aguilar held Altoona off the scoreboard through the fourth innings before Altoona exploded for four runs in the fifth behind singles from Adam Boeve, Dave Parrish and Taber Lee
Andrew McCutchen and Brett Roneberg the followed with back-to-back triples to put the Curve on top 4-0

The Mets rallied for six runs in the home half of the fifth, but the Curve responded with another four-run inning in the sixth sparked by a Neil Walker home run

Jason Roach (1-1) earned the win for Altoona despite his troubles in the sixth

Marcelo Perez (0-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing four earned runs in 2/3 of an inning
