Heard during the game

(01) During the Pre-game Show, the commentator said - "Brett Roneberg is not in tonight's lineup ... in fact, he is not even at the ballpark as he had a temperature of 102 and has returned to the team hotel"
He then wished Brett all the best, and a quick return to the games

Email from Brett

High, high temperature - over 100!!
Now back at the hotel for the night
I can go back at seven or so if I feel better - but I don't think it's likely
I am bad right now - my head is miserable
Oh well, at least it lets my hand get another day to relax!!
Will check my email later

Game Reports

Andrew McCutchen (pictured) legged out just the second inside-the-park home run
in Curve history, but the Akron Aeros scored the game's final seven runs
and sent Altoona to its fifth straight loss, 8-4, Monday night at Canal Park in Akron, OH

McCutchen's dash not enough in Curve loss

Andrew McCutchen legged out just the second inside-the-park home run in Altoona Curve history, but the Akron Aeros scored seven unanswered runs to send the Curve to their fifth consecutive loss, 8-4, Monday night at Canal Park in Akron, OH

With Altoona leading 3-1 in the fourth inning, McCutchen drilled a pitch from Akron starter and eventual winning pitcher Scott Lewis off the top of the center-field wall and raced all the way around the bases as the ball kicked away from Aeros' center fielder Trevor Crowe
The inside-the-park homer was Altoona's first since Garrett Long did it on July 28, 2000 at New Britain

However, McCutchen's fourth home run of the season was the final run plated against Lewis and three Akron relievers

Lewis (1-2) survived five innings to notch his first victory of the season
The left-hander, who topped all minor league pitchers in ERA last season, allowed four runs and seven hits in his five innings of work

Relievers T.J. Burton, Jensen Lewis and Rich Rundles combined for four scoreless frames to preserve the win for the Aeros, who kept pace with Erie atop the E.L. South

Curve starter Alay Soler couldn't hold onto the three-run cushion he was provided in the bottom of the fourth and was bounced from the game after 3-2/3 innings
Soler, who was making a spot start forced by last Thursday's doubleheader against Portland, was charged with all three Akron runs, which tied the game at 4-4
Jon Van Every's two-run triple was the key hit of the inning

The Aeros then seized the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring twice to grab a 6-4 lead
Justin Vaclavik (1-3) was charged with both runs and was saddled with the defeat

Offensively, Altoona managed 10 hits, but outfielder Adam Boeve went hitless to end his team season-high 12-game hitting streak
Boeve's 21-game on-base streak also came to a halt as he failed to reach base in four trips to the plate

Brandon Chaves led the way with three hits in four at-bats, while Neil Walker collected the Curve's other multi-hit game, going 2-for-4

Alex Fernandez ripped a two-run double as part of a three-run Curve second inning

Altoona (19-21), losers of a season-high five consecutive games, will be back in action Tuesday night against Akron at 7.05pm at Canal Park
Right-hander Yoslan Herrera (0-3, 5.35) will be on the hill looking for his first win of the season and looking to end the Curve's skid
The Aeros will counter with lefty Shawn Nottingham (3-2, 2.68)

Aeros soar past Curve

Ryan Goleski drove in three runs and Jonathan Van Every smacked a two-run triple as Akron defeated visiting Altoona, 8-4, on Monday

Goleski drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning and lifted sacrifice flies in the fifth and seventh
Van Every's triple in the fourth plated Jordan Brown and Brian Barton

Van Every, who went 2-for-4, entered in a 1-for-11 slide but leads the team with a .316 batting average

Leadoff batter Argenis Reyes went 3-for-5 and scored two runs for the Aeros (24-18)

Starter Scott Lewis (1-2) surrendered four runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking two in five innings for the win

T.J. Burton gave up a hit and a walk in 1-2/3 innings and Jensen Lewis struck out three while yielding a hit in 1-1/3 frames

Rich Rundles allowed a hit and a walk in one inning

Curve reliever Justin Vaclavik (1-3) took the loss after giving up two runs - one earned - on three walks while recording one out

Starter Alay Soler yielded four runs on five hits while fanning two and walking three in 3-2/3 innings

Alex Fernandez belted a two-run double in the second and Andrew McCutcheon led off the third with an inside-the-park home run

Brandon Chaves finished 3-for-4 with an RBI for Altoona (19-21), which has lost five straight

Akron opens homestand with 8-4 win over Altoona

The Akron Aeros won the first game of a eight-game homestand, defeating the Altoona Curve 8-4

Aeros starter Scott Lewis won his first game of the season despite giving up four runs in five innings

Akron scored three in the fourth, two in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh to overcome the 4-1 deficit

Argenis Reyes got the offense going from the lead off spot, going 3-5 with a double and two runs scored

Asdrubal Cabrera went 1-3 from the two hole and walked once, scored once and stole two bases, as did Reyes

Brian Barton and Jon Van Every each recorded two hits
Barton scored twice, while Van Every drove in a pair on a triple and scored once

Ryan Goleski went 0-2, but drove in three on two sacrifice flies and a fielder's choice ground out

Following Lewis on the mound, the Aeros bullpen dominated as T.J. Burton, Jensen Lewis and Rich Rundles went a combined four innings, allowing no runs on three hits
They struck out three and walked two, facing just 17 batters

Akron and Altoona will continue the four-game set on Tuesday, May 22 at 7.05pm
Akron will send Shawn Nottingham (3-2) to the mound to take on the Curve’s Yoslan Herrera (0-3)

Curve drop fifth straight

Andrew McCutchen produced one of the best highlights of the season, but another pitching collapse extended the Curve’s losing streak to five games Monday night
McCutchen hit an inside-the-park home run, just the second in franchise history, as Altoona built an early 4-1 lead over Akron

The Curve’s pitching staff has been battered during the losing streak, and it continued as the Aeros stormed back for an 8-4 win at Canal Park

Akron scored three times in the fourth inning to tie and took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth
The Aeros added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to seal it

Curve pitchers have allowed eight runs in three straight games
During the five-game skid, Altoona has given up 42 runs (8.4 per game)

Alex Fernandez hit a two-run double, and Brandon Chaves had an RBI single off Akron starter Scott Lewis for a 3-1 Curve lead in the second

McCutchen led off the third by drilling a ball off the wall in center field and raced around the bases as it got loose in the outfield

Akron’s tying rally in the fourth, off Curve starter Alay Soler, included a two-run triple by Jon Van Every, who later scored to pull the Aeros even

Reliever Justin Vaclavik (1-3) endured a disastrous start to the fifth inning
He walked leadoff man Asdrubal Cabrera, threw wildly to first on a pickoff attempt, walked Jordan Brown and hit Brian Barton to load the bases with no outs
Dave Davidson came in for Vaclavik but couldn’t escape the threat
Cabrera scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error to the plate by first baseman Steven Pearce, and Brown scored on Goleski’s sacrifice fly to make it 6-4

Lewis (1-2) got the win despite allowing four runs in five innings
