Email from Brett

Before the game
I am a lot better today - still not 100% - but I am okay for now
I am going to be there for the game today and we'll see how it goes
I don't think I will start but I will be there!!

After the game
Well, you may know I have been placed on the 'DL' until the second game in Bowie which is on Saturday 26th May
My hand is a little sore, and with me being sick that was just another reason
Plus we have just lost a catcher to injury so they are going to try and work around some things and this is what the Team Officials have decided to do
Might also be good to let my hand get as healthy as possible before I play again and get ready to get hot!!

Game Reports

Curve Notes - 'Covering the Bases'

The Curve’s struggling bullpen received a much-needed boost Tuesday with the return of RHP Matt Peterson, who was promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis on May 15
Peterson had an 0.98 ERA and seven saves in 12 appearances as Altoona’s closer
He allowed one run in 4-1/3 innings for Indy

OF Brett Roneberg was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Saturday, with a strained left wrist to clear a spot for Peterson
Roneberg is batting .227 in 33 games

Randy Ruiz (pictured) belted his team-leading seventh home run to give the Curve an early lead,
but Akron shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera drilled a third-inning grand slam
to help send Altoona to its sixth straight loss, 5-4, Tuesday night in Akron

Aeros send Curve to sixth straight loss

Asdrubal Cabrera's third-inning grand slam off of Yoslan Herrera was enough to sink the Curve as they lost their sixth straight game, 5-4, Tuesday night at Canal Park in Akron, OH

The night belonged to Cabrera, who added two doubles to his grand slam and drove in all five Akron runs

The losing streak for the Curve represents their longest such skid since they lost seven consecutive ballgames during the 2001 season

The Curve got off to a good start against Aeros starter Shawn Nottingham, as Randy Ruiz gave Altoona the lead, 1-0, with his seventh home run of the year in the second inning

Herrera kept Akron off the scoreboard for the first two innings, but walked Trevor Crowe to lead off the third
Wyatt Toregas followed with a single to put two men aboard and Herrera hit Pat Osborn to load the bases with nobody out
Cabrera blasted the first pitch he saw from Herrera over the wall in right field to erase the Aeros' deficit and put Akron in front, 4-1

The lead grew to four runs in the fifth inning when Osborn led off with a double
Again, it was Cabrera who victimized Herrera, doubling to right field to bring home Osborn and cap the Akron scoring

Herrera failed to gain his first win of the season, taking the loss to fall to 0-4

Nottingham (4-2) bounced back from Ruiz's homer to hold the Curve to just one run over seven strong innings, and won for the fourth time

Altoona made a game of it in the eighth inning by plating two runs off of Aeros' reliever Reid Santos
Brandon Chaves and Matt Meath provided back-to-back singles to put two men on for Andrew McCutchen
McCutchen contributed his second double of the ballgame to score Chaves and move Meath to third
Meath scored from there on a ground-out by Neil Walker and the Curve trailed, 5-3

McCutchen's RBI double was his third extra-base hit of the series
He also doubled in the sixth inning after lashing just the second inside-the-park home run in franchise history in Monday's series opener
McCutchen singled in his first trip against Nottingham and finished the night 3-for-4

The Curve rallied off of Randy Newsom in the ninth, but ultimately fell short
Alex Fernandez singled to start the inning and advanced to second as Jason Bowers drew a walk
Newsom recovered to retire both Brian Peterson and Chaves, but allowed a pinch-hit single to Adam Boeve to score Fernandez and make it a 5-4 game
Newsom earned his first save of the season by inducing a pop-fly from McCutchen to end the ballgame

The Aeros have won the first two games of the four-game series and will look for the series win in Wednesday's game three scheduled for 7.05pm
RHP Kip Bouknight (4-1, 3.38) will make the start for Altoona and will be opposed by LHP Chuck Lofgren (3-3, 3.86) for Akron

Cabrera slams Curve

Asdrubal Cabrera went 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBIs as Akron held on to beat visiting Altoona, 5-4, on Tuesday

Cabrera cranked his first career grand slam in the third inning to give Akron a 4-1 lead
It was the sixth homer of the season for the 21-year-old shortstop, who added an RBI double in the fifth and doubled again in the seventh to raise his batting average to .324

Aeros starter Shawn Nottingham (4-2) yielded one run on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk in seven innings

Reid Santos gave up two runs on three hits in the eighth, and Randy Newsom got his first save, despite allowing a run on two hits in the ninth

Pat Osborn doubled and scored twice for Akron (25-18)

Curve starter Yoslan Herrera (0-4) was charged with five runs on five hits and two walks with one strikeout in six innings

Andrew McCutchen was 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI for Altoona (19-22)

Curve getting closer to history

The Curve are one defeat away from matching the second-worst losing streak in franchise history

Akron’s Asdrubal Cabrera belted a grand slam in the third inning and RBI double in the fifth, and the Aeros held on to beat the Curve, 5-4, Tuesday night at Canal Park

Altoona’s losing skid extended to six games
The Curve haven’t dropped seven in a row since 2001, when that team did it twice

The 2000 club lost 11 in a row for the longest streak in franchise history

Tuesday’s loss also put Altoona three games under .500 for the first time since April 17, when it was 2-5

The Curve nearly battled back from a 5-1 deficit, but Akron reliever Randy Newsom stranded the tying run at second base in the ninth inning to earn his first save
Alex Fernandez led off the ninth with a single to center, and Jason Bowers followed with a walk
Pinch-hitter Adam Boeve singled with two outs to drive in Fernandez and make it 5-4
Andrew McCutchen came up with Bowers on second but fouled out to first base to end the game

McCutchen did enjoy one of his best games of the season, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI

McCutchen’s second double scored Brandon Chaves to cut the Curve’s deficit to 5-2 in the eighth
Matt Meath then scored on Neil Walker’s groundout to close the gap to two

Altoona starter Yoslan Herrera (0-4) pitched six innings, giving up all five Akron runs
He had allowed only two runs in his last 11-1/3 innings entering Tuesday’s start

Akron starter Shawn Nottingham (4-2) held the Curve to one run in seven innings, scattering six hits, fanning six and walking one
He gave up a second-inning homer to Ruiz for a 1-0 Altoona lead
