Game Reports

Wardell Starling (pictured) and Adam Boeve were both ejected from the ballgame
as the Curve lost for the tenth consecutive time, 4-2, to Bowie at Prince George's Stadium
The Curve are now just one loss away from matching the franchise-record of 11

Curve lose cool in tenth straight loss

Curve starter Wardell Starling was ejected during a three-run Bowie second inning that propelled the Baysox to a 4-2 victory that extended the second-longest losing streak in Curve franchise-history to ten games

The Curve are now just one loss away from equaling the franchise-record of 11 consecutive losses which occured during the 2000 season (April 15-26)

Starling's ejection occured on a ball off the bat of Bowie's Travis Brown that was ruled as a fair ball down the line in right field and scored both Val Majewski and Ryan Hubele
Starling, along with nearly the entire Altoona team contested that the ball had landed in foul territory
Starling charged angrily after home plate umpire Mark Ripperger and was ejected after a short argument

That forced the Curve to the bullpen early in the ballgame for the second straight night
Luis Munoz didn't survive the first inning in the series opener on Friday

Justin Vaclavik came on for Starling and allowed three more hits and an additional run in the inning to increase Bowie's lead to 4-0

Adam Boeve was also ejected from the ballgame by Ripperger in the fifth inning
Boeve was ruled out as a third strike was added to his count for stepping out of the batter's box at which point Boeve began an argument with Ripperger that led to his dismissal

Brian Peterson led off the inning with his first home run of the season off of Chris Waters to cut the lead to three runs, 4-1
Waters (1-4) walked Peterson to lead off the seventh inning and Peterson eventually came around to score on an Andrew McCutchen sacrifice fly to right field which cut the lead to two, 4-2

Waters departed in the midst of the run-scoring inning but did collect his first victory of the season

Starling (2-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing three earned runs prior to his ejection from the ballgame

The Baysox started the game effectively in the first inning, plating a run for the game's first lead
Ruddy Yan led off the ballgame for Bowie with a double and scored a batter later on a bounce-out by Luis Jimenez to put the Baysox in front, 1-0

Despite his early troubles, Vaclavik turned in a solid outing for Altoona, establishing a new career-high for innings pitched in an appearance
The right-hander worked 4-1/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits

Jason Roach also recorded two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth innings

The Curve will again attempt to snap their losing streak on Saturday in game three of a four-game series with the Bowie Baysox at 2.05pm
RHP Yoslan Herrera (0-4, 5.66) will look for his first win of the season for Altoona against RHP Radhames Liz (3-2, 3.56) for Bowie

Waters drops Curve

Chris Waters pitched 6-1/3 solid innings as Bowie defeated Altoona, 4-2, on Saturday at Prince George's Stadium

Waters (1-4) allowed two runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts for his first win in 10 starts

Jim Hoey nailed down his Eastern League-leading 13th save with a perfect ninth

Luis Antonio Jimenez and Travis Brown drove in two runs apiece for the Baysox (26-22)
Jimenez plated Ruddy Yan with a groundout in the first and a single in the second
Brown added a two-run double in the second

The Curve (19-26) lost their 10th straight game and are mired in the second-longest losing streak in franchise history

They also had two players ejected
After Brown's double, nearly the entire Altoona team contested that the ball was foul
Starter Wardell Starling (2-4) charged home plate umpire Mark Ripperger and was tossed after a brief argument
In the fifth, Adam Boeve stepped out of the batter's box and was given a called third strike by Ripperger
He argued and also was thrown out

Starling was charged with three runs on six hits, struck out one and did not walk a batter in 1-2/3 innings

Brian Peterson crushed a solo shot in the fifth for his first homer of the season and Andrew McCutchen lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh for Altoona

Frustrations start building for Curve

The Curve lost their cool and lost their 10th consecutive game Saturday night
Two Altoona players were ejected, and manager Tim Leiper argued with umpires about a half-dozen times during a 4-2 loss to Bowie at Prince George’s Stadium

Some key calls went against the Curve, and when a team is struggling so badly, those kind of things can lead to frustration overload

If Altoona loses today, it will match the franchise record of 11 consecutive losses

Starting pitcher Wardell Starling (2-4) reached his boiling point in the second inning and was ejected for arguing the key play of the game
Bowie’s Travis Brown hit a ball down the right-field line that was ruled a double, though the Curve camp thought it was foul
The hit scored two runs for a 3-0 Baysox lead
When home plate umpire Mark Ripperger ruled it a fair ball, Starling charged the plate
Starling was ejected, putting further strain on a bullpen that was called into long duty in the first inning Friday night when Luis Munoz struggled

Curve relievers came through with a second straight outstanding effort to keep the team in the game, allowing only one run over 6-1/3 innings

Justin Vaclavik worked a career-long 4-1/3 frames, giving up just one run

Altoona’s offense couldn’t catch up, though
Brian Peterson hit a solo homer, and Andrew McCutchen hit a sacrifice fly to account for the runs

The Curve’s Adam Boeve was ejected in the fifth inning by Ripperger for arguing a strike call

Baysox slide into second place with 4-2 win over Altoona

The Baysox took advantage of a reeling Altoona squad that has now lost 10 straight games, beating the Curve for the second straight night, 4-2

The Baysox got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, when Luis Jiminez hit into a groundout which scored Ruddy Yan, who reached on a lead-off double, putting the Baysox ahead, 2-0

Altoona starter Wardell Starling was ejected in the second inning after arguing with home plate umpire Mark Ripperger
Starling's ejection occured after Travis Brown smacked a double that was ruled as a fair ball down the line in right field that scored Val Majewski and Ryan Hubele
Starling charged angrily after home plate umpire Ripperger and was ejected after a short argument

Justin Vaclavik then came into the game to replace Starling and yielded three straight singles to Ruddy Yan, Paco Figueroa and Luis Jimenez
Jimenez’s single scored Yan putting the Baysox ahead, 4-0

Chris Waters had a strong outing overall, yielding only two runs on the night over 6.1 innings

Brian Peterson connected on a solo home run in the Curve fifth, cutting the Baysox lead to, 4-1

The Curve plated another run in the seventh inning off of reliever Rosman Garcia, when Andrew McCutchen hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Peterson, cutting the Baysox lead to, 4-2
Garcia would survive the inning though, getting Matt Meath out on strikes

Garcia would pitch a one-hit eighth inning giving up only a lead-off single to Randy Ruiz
Neil Walker would hit into a double play and Steve Pearce would strike out looking, ending the inning

Jim Hoey entered the game in the ninth inning and converted his 12th save in as many attempts getting the side out in order, with Taber Lee grounding out to first ending the ballgame
Hoey’s ERA remains at 0.00 on the season

Chris Waters hard luck ended as he picked up his first win, moving to (1-4) on the year

Starling (2-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing three earned runs prior to his ejection from the game

With the win the Baysox improve to 26-22 on the season, and are in sole possession of second place in the Southern Division, 2.5 games behind first place Akron

The loss drops the Curve to 19-26 on the season, and in fifth place in the division
