Brett back on the Disabled List - Monday 25th June 2007

A note from Brett on Sunday 24th June 2007
I know things haven't been going really well lately - and I am afraid it just got a little worse!!
I have hurt my hand again and I am going back on the Disabled List again tomorrow
I am pretty sure of this because I told Tim Leiper I couldn't swing
and that it will take some time just like before
I am very disappointed just as I am sure that you all are
There is nothing I can do now besides trying to rehab as best I can
and get healthy as quickly as possible
I feel like crap over here right now and might just go see a movie tonight to kill some time
and get my mind off of it all
But tomorrow I will be good again and do all I can to get better!!

A note from Brett on Tuesday 26th June 2007
Well, here we are again
I have been to the doctor again today and got an MRI like I did with my shoulder
It hurt a lot more this time when they put the dye in - and I about went through the roof!
Got the reading 'sort of' back tonight
The assistant read it and said it was a deep bone bruise and it should heel to 100% over time
Not sure how long that is just yet
I find out the final reading tomorrow but it should be okay
The bruise is in the same place where I broke it in January
Sucks!!
I am now going to go into rehab and I think I am staying here to do it
and I just hope it doesn't take too long
Also there are two more outfielders coming tomorrow
I have to talk to Brian Graham in the next few days about what they want me to do
I honestly am not sure about my playing time when I do come back
but we'll cross the bridge when we come to it
Just an update and I will be back online tomorrow

A note from Brett on Thursday 28th June 2007
No news yet - and I am going to take that as good news!!
The doctor didn't call or come bye yesterday so I will say that makes me feel a little better!!
Hope to hear officially today and I will email or call then

A note from Brett on Saturday 7th July 2007
With the hand, I have a doctor's appointment the first day after the All Star Game break
which is 10th and 11th July
I might get a pain killing injection if I need it - but it does feel a lot better
I have been doing a small range of motion exercises and it's improving
So hopefully after five more days I may even get to start swinging!!
I want to be ready and then have six weeks to finish the season
That is my ideal situation

A note from Brett on Thursday 12th July 2007
There isn't any really bad news - more so just news - not good or bad
The first MRI I had two weeks ago was done incorrectly, so I found out today
What they did see on the first one was two bone bruises but no definitive answer on the ligaments
So I am now having what's called a three injection arthrogram
They put dye in three different areas to see if there are any leaks
Had the first one today and I then have two more Monday
Then an appointment after them on Monday with the hand specialist
Hope it's good news!
As for now, there is no chance of playing til at least the first on the month in my mind
And with our lineup how it is right now, I don't know if I will play when healthy anyway
Not what I wanted to hear, but there isn't much I can do right now
except push my good news date back to Monday and just hope!

Curve Game Day Show on Sunday 15th July 2007

The audio file opposite/below includes
two segments from the Game Day Show

He says he would like to see him back in the
lineup, and that he "feels bad for the guy"

First Base Coach during the recent games

PART TWO
During the Curve Injury Report,
the commentator mentions that Brett is
an important part of the Curve lineup,
but there is no timetable for his return

A note from Brett on Wednesday 18th July 2007
Is all good!
Every scan I have had has said that it's all okay and that I am okay to resume activity
I will start small and slow and hope to progress to swinging in about a week or so
The doctor said it is going to hurt - probably a lot - but it's not doing further damage
so try to swing through it
He is going to give me some painkillers and I am going to go from there
If after two to three weeks of trying to play and it's still being sore,
I will go to Pittsburgh to see another hand specialist for a second opinion
But as for today, I am starting to do things!!
About bloody time, huh!!

A note from Brett on Monday 23rd July 2007
Well, today went really good
A lot better than I thought it was going to be
I had fifteen dry swings with a fungo bat
and surprisingly had zero pain or discomfort
I also got to play catch as well
It all went really well!!
I am not sure of my plans tomorrow
but I am sure it will be a little more than today
Not bad for a start!!

A note from Brett on Thursday 26th July 2007
Tuesday I swung a fungo twenty times - with no problems
Wednesday I swung the fungo fifteen times and then a timber bat also fifteen times
and again, no worries at all
Today I am a little achy but I have to deal with a few niggles for a little while
I am not sure what my plan is for today but tomorrow I am hitting off the tee

Game Reports

Steven Pearce (pictured) hit a two-run home run to highlight a five-run first inning
which helped the Curve cruise to a 10-5 win over the first-place Akron Aeros
in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night at Canal Park in Akron

Curve score early and often in win at Akron

The Curve erupted for five runs in the top of the first inning and three more in the second and used that early offensive outburst to cruise to a 10-5 win over the first-place Akron Aeros in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio

Steven Pearce, who entered Thursday's contest as the Eastern League's leading hitter with a .332 average, started the Curve's scoring in the first inning by rocketing a two-run home run over the left-field wall
The longball was Pearce's 13th with the Curve and his 24th combined between Class-A Lynchburg and Altoona

Pearce went on to record two more RBI's in the contest to give him 70 in a Curve uniform, which is the second-most among all Eastern League hitters

Javier Guzman recorded a two-run double and Brian Peterson knocked him in with an RBI single to complete the Curve's five-run first

Altoona then posted three more runs in the top of the second on a two-run triple by Neil Walker and a sacrifice fly by Pearce - the third of his four RBI's on the night

Pitching with a huge lead all game long, Curve starter Yoslan Herrera (6-5) easily earned his sixth win of the season
The Cuban-born right-hander went a season-long 6-2/3 innings in the contest and allowed three runs on 10 hits
Since opening the season with an 0-4 record and 6.47 ERA in 10 starts, Herrera is 6-1 with a 2.42 ERA (44.2 IP/12 ER) over his last eight outings

Akron starter Shawn Nottingham (7-9) was saddled with all 10 Altoona runs over 5-1/3 innings of work to take the loss

Jason Delaney kept a pair of lengthy streaks alive against the Aeros, extending his hitting streak to 13 straight games - the longest by any Curve hitter this season - and his franchise-record RBI streak to 12 consecutive games

Despite the win, Altoona (53-49) remains 4-1/2 games behind second-place Erie in wild card race in the E.L. South
The SeaWolves defeated last-place Harrisburg Thursday evening in Erie

With the loss, Akron (60-45) is now just one game ahead of the SeaWolves in the race for the division's top spot

The Curve and Aeros will play the second game of their four-game series Friday evening at 7.05pm
Curve right-hander Kip Bouknight (8-3, 3.71) will oppose Akron lefty Chuck Lofgren (9-4, 4.15) in Friday's mound matchup

Akron loses to Altoona 10-5
Gimenez homer in eighth not enough

The Akron Aeros fell to the Altoona Curve in the first game of a four game series 10-5 on Thursday night

The Curve came out of the gates swinging in the first inning and never looked back

Shawn Nottingham gave up five runs on six hits in the first and allowed three more runs on three hits in the second inning
Nottingham calmed down for the remainder of his outing, pitching 5.1 innings
Turning the game over to T.J. Burton in the sixth, he left with two men on and they both came around to score
Nottingham ended the evening with ten earned runs on ten hits, three strikeouts, three walks, and a home run, picking up his ninth loss of the season

Yoslan Herrera got the win, moving his record to 6-5 on the year
He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on ten hits, striking out three

The Aeros put two on the board in the second as Wyatt Toregas scored Chris Gimenez on a single and Brandon Pinckney hit a sacrifice fly to bring Toregas home

Asdrubal Cabrera hit a single to score Trevor Crowe in the seventh while Gimenez hit a two-run shot in the eighth to end the scoring on the night, making the final 10-5

Brian Barton ended a 12 game hitting streak, going 0-4 on the night
During his streak he batted .380 with seven runs scored, four doubles, 11 RBI, two home runs, three walks and a stolen base

Pitching tomorrow is Akron’s ace, southpaw Chuck Lofgren
He has a 9-5 record with a 4.15 ERA, leading the team with 95 strikeouts on the year

Right hander Kip Bouknight will take the mound for the Curve with an 8-3 record and a 3.71 ERA

Pearce powers Curve

The Curve’s potent offense came through in a big way Thursday
Steven Pearce once again led the charge with four RBIs in Altoona’s 10-5 win over Akron at Canal Park

Pearce started a huge five-run first inning with a two-run homer as the Curve jumped on the Aeros early
Javier Guzman brought home two more with a double, and Brian Peterson singled in the fifth run of the inning off Aeros starter Shawn Nottingham
All five runs scored with two outs

The Curve weren’t finished off Nottingham, who was pounded for all 10 runs

Neil Walker’s triple in the second inning scored two runs, and Pearce added an RBI sacrifice fly as the Curve erupted for an 8-0 lead

It was more than enough support for Curve starter Yoslan Herrera, who continued his string of strong starts
Herrera (6-5) lasted 6-2/3 innings, the most he’s thrown all season, and has allowed three runs or fewer in his past eight outings
He has won all of his starts and has a 2.42 ERA during that span
The righty worked around 10 hits, all singles

Jason Delaney, who recorded an RBI in his 12th consecutive game, and Pearce added RBI singles in the sixth inning to close the books on Nottingham

Nottingham (7-9) was lit up for 10 hits in 5-1/3 innings

The Curve finished the night with 12 hits and every starter had at least one

The offense has scored 10 runs or more five times since July 15 and is averaging 6.8 runs in its past 13 games

Akron cut the deficit in half with Chris Gimenez’s two-run homer off Ronald Belisario in the eighth that made the score 10-5
The blast was the first Belisario has allowed since joining the Curve two weeks ago

Chris Hernandez pitched a scoreless ninth in his first appearance since Saturday
