This Church has been "bought-and-sold" over the years
and unfortunately the only photos I can find have the real estate signs displayed !!

****************************************************************************

The following article mentions that the Church was sold in February this year ...

... and here is another real estate advert as it is on the market at the present time (June 2010)
and there are two photos from this advert near the bottom of this page

"Interesting Information"

During March 2006, Sharon travelled
to Adelaide for a nephew's wedding
and CLICK HERE for the details

While there, she went for a "tour" of her
childhood haunts and this church was included

Here is what she wrote after seeing it

We arrived at the Semaphore Baptist Church
which is now a second hand store!
It wouldn't have been so bad
if all the paint hadn't been peeling
We had such great times at that church
but 'the old girl' looks a bit sad now

Today I found these two photos
and I'm guessing that this is what she saw !!

The organ is still there !!

When compared to the 1907 photo above,
it looks like it has been moved
into the centre of the room

Recollections from Sharon ... Part One

Recollections from Sharon ... Part Two

My parents were married in the Semaphore Baptist Church during 1941

They were involved with the activities of the Church until we moved to Greenhill in about 1970

Very early on my Dad was the "organ boy" ... I'm not sure of his age but he had to sit behind and pump the organ each Sunday during Services !!
----------IMPORTANT - please click HERE before reading further !!

Dad was a Deacon and Mother was in the Ladies' Guild
Dad also conducted the Church Choir and he always had a smile for me when they sang ... 'Jesus Rose Of Sharon'

I was dedicated and baptised there

My life along with that of my brothers and sisters revolved around the different activities held at the Church:-
---------Sunday School
---------Junior Christian Endeavour
---------Sitting for our Scripture Union Exams
---------Netball ... I played for years and loved it !!
---------Dancing ... we put on a concert each year
---------Youth Club ... this was on Friday nights and was like a gym
---------Vacation Bible School ... held during school holidays and we had games, competitions, crafts and things like that
---------Coffee Lounge ... we started this on Sunday nights after Church ... the bikies used to come in and I was a bit scared of them!!
---------Sunday School Anniversaries ... and see more below
---------Sunday School Picnics

As far back as I can remember we waited with great excitement for the Sunday School Anniversary at the Semaphore Baptist Church
It was a yearly event
Big platforms that went almost to the ceiling were built at the back area of the Church, either side of the organ
We all gathered out the front and then marched down the aisles and up on to the platform
We always marched to the same tune which still gives me goose bumps today !!
I can hum the tune and hear it in my head, but I cannot remember it's name !! ... help, what was it called ??
My Dad conducted these Anniversaries and chose all the songs
The "practice sessions" were almost as much fun as the real thing
Each year we had a new 'Sunday Best' dress which my Mother always made and that was then our best dress for the rest of the year !!

I have very fond memories of the Semaphore Baptist Church

Downstairs was the Kindergarten Room and the Primary Room and the Intermediate Room plus the Kitchen
The Junior Room had a stage and that is where most of the functions were held

It was a happy time

I have the video of the last service in the Semaphore Baptist church and I can see Mother wiping a tear after Lesley and two friends sang a beautiful hymn

It seems such a dreadful shame to think the beautiful old Church is for sale ... even sadder that it is not required as a Church any more
I have heard that it is "Heritage Listed" so at least it cannot be knocked down !!
