A look back
at the 2010 Race |

Hi Tanya Shannon mentioned that perhaps you might maybe be interested in being a Wheellie Mad Women We are just getting a team of ladies together to run the "Great Wheelbarrow Way Race" It goes from Mareeba to Chillagoe over three days Yes, it is 145 km ... but there are ten ladies so less than five kilometres per day and the wheelbarrow is empty !! The idea of the race is to have a personal fitness challenge but also raise a bit of money for the kids with cerebral palsy We do this with raffle tickets, sponsorships and probably a Bunnings sausage sizzle The cost of the weekend is $200.00 which covers the bus, team shirts, food, team registration and the lot If you can do a three kilometre run, you're fit enough It really is sprinting so some interval training is pretty much the important bit Last year we were running in about one hundred turns ... it is essentially a relay Take care ... Hi again, Tanya We leave Friday morning 13th May and get back the afternoon of Sunday 16th May 2011 The total cost of the weekend is $200.00 This covers the team registration fee, the fuel for the bus, accommodation, meals You won’t have too many expenses for the weekends ... just any pub drinks you buy The money will likely go into FNQ Cerebral Palsy Support Group as a donation so you’ll get a donation receipt for the amount In terms of fundraising, generally the runners sell a few raffle tickets and collect sponsorships Last year, most people took their raffle tickets out to work and left them in lunch rooms or did the rounds at work and play Most people sent an email to a few key people asking for sponsorships (close friends and family) ... we send around draft letters/e-mails that people usually just personalize and adapt Sometimes the donations were cash, but mostly people then popped on to the website and donated via PayPal All donations are tax deductible I personally was surprised how many people were interested in the race and in helping the kids I was a bit worried about it up front, but it went quite easy How much people did, varied from person to person We hope to raise about $10,000.00 all up but it accumulates rather fast once our Corporate Sponsors come on board Other than that, it may be a couple of hours on a weekend to either sell raffle tickets or lend a hand at a sausage sizzle (Bunnings) The only other event we have will be on 7th April, after work, which is a Presentation by an Image Consultant at a Wine and Cheese Evening We are selling tickets to this as part of the fundraising So I guess, in terms of fundraising, it happens slowly in the weeks leading up to the race and shouldn’t take too much time ... say half to one weekend day over the next eight weeks and a bit of time to lay out raffle tickets or send an e-mail The Wheellie Mad Women are a great group and have a lot of fun I’m sure you’d have a great weekend We are going to be running along a mixed team from CBC Staff Selection this year as well which will make it more and merrier Happy to have a chat or if you have more questions .
